Rumor: 2K9 College Hoops Canned, EA Seeks NCAA Deal

Rumor has it that 2K Sports have walked away from negotiations with The Collegiate Licensing Company and that 2K9 College Hoops has been officially canned due to the break down in the talks.
The Collegiate Licensing Company is the nation's leading collegiate trademark licensing and marketing company and can license the nations college teams to a video game maker. While I've yet to hear back from the CLC or 2K Sports, I have heard that Electronic Arts may have something to do with this latest development.
According to the rumblings, Electronic Arts may be in the process of trying to secure another exclusive sports franchise by landing the same sort of licensing deal that managed to grab with the NFL.
Electronic Arts' NCAA March Madness 08 scored a 70.9 percent on Game Rankings, while 2K8 College Hoops scored nearly ten percent higher with an 80.5 percent.
I've requested comments from 2K, CLC and EA and will make sure to update when official comments or no comments roll in.

Take-Two: College Hoops Canceled

Responding to rumors we broke earlier today that College Hoops 2K9 has been canceled due to a breakdown in negotiations with the license holders for collegiate basketball, 2K Sports parent company Take-Two had this to say to Kotaku:
2K Sports has decided not to continue negotiations with the CLC for the license for its top-rated College Hoops franchise, which would have been released next in November 2008. We are committed to providing fans with high-quality, critically-acclaimed sports games, but given our disciplined approach to the business, we do not believe the current discussions would result in an acceptable outcome.
I followed up with Take-Two to try and get more details and while the declined to talk about any roll EA might have had in the break-down, they did confirm that College Hoops 2K9 has indeed been canceled.
No word still from The Collegiate Licensing Company or Electronic Arts, but we'll keep you posted.

EA Calls Fox Out on "Insulting" Mass Effect Inaccuracies

Electronic Arts, likely sick of having their recently-acquired role-playing franchise Mass Effect dragged through the mud on national television, has requested that Fox News Channel correct their error-plagued segment on the game.
In the letter, which cites Kotaku, Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of communications, asks Teri VanHorn, producer of the Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, to clarify "serious errors" the channel made in their Mass Effect story.
"As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect." The letter starts and then proceeds to outline their very strong case.

LucasArts President Talks About His Departure

LucasArts president Jim Ward surprised the developer on Monday with news that he was leaving the company he's been with for nearly ten years.
In a prepared statement sent to Kotaku shortly after we broke the news of his departure, Ward sang the praises of a game development company he says he's helped reboot.
"I am so proud of all people and the work we've done together at LucasArts over the last four years," he wrote. "It's been an incredible experience. Together we've rebooted the company and set LucasArts on a path to even greater success. This is a fantastic team and they are positioned for their best year ever."

Mass Effect DLC Brings Batarians to the Mix

Bioware today announced the first downloadable content pack for their Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect.
The Bring Down the Sky downloadable content pack hits LIVE on March 10 at 2 a.m. PST, for 400 MS points ($5) and is the first in a series of planned downloadable content that expands the Mass Effect universe and continues the plot.
The pack will include an uncharted world that introduces the Batarians alien race. In the pack a Batarian extremist group has hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Only Commander Shepard can save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid completes its deadly descent.
The developers say the pack will contain about an hour and a half of action and a new Achievement worth 50 Gamerscore points.

Confirmed: Duke Nukem Forever Coming in 2008, 3D Hitting XBLA

In a series of emails with the Dallas Business Journal, 3D Realms' President Scott Miller confirmed all sorts of news about the Duke Nukem franchise of games. (We wish that anything "confirmed" about Duke Nukem didn't just make us giggle at this point.)
First and foremost, the elusive Duke Nukem Forever is slated for a late 2008 release. As for platforms, Miller explains:
We haven't formally announced any platforms for DNF...But, of course hitting the big three makes the most sense (PC, PS3, 360).As for rumors of an XBLA version of Duke Nukem 3D, those are now looking pretty legit.

Jaffe: PS3 Twisted Metal Next Project

When David Jaffe released Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition he promised that there was a hidden message in the game that would reveal the next project for Jaffe's Eat Sleep Play development studio.
Well it may have been "hidden really, really, really well" but you know how hardcore fans can be. A group over at Gamefaq managed to decipher the message in record time, discovering that it reads: METAL IS COMING ON PSTHREE.
I contacted Jaffe, who's hanging at DICE this week, to see if the gamers were on the money and he confirmed they were, adding his chagrin at how fast the code was discovered and cracked. Unfortunately, he hit me with a big fat no comment when I asked him if the upcoming PS3 version of Metal was going to be hitting the console via a disc or as a downloadable.
"As for how it gets distributed, no comment :)"

EA Extends NFL License Into Futurama-esque 2013

Electronic Arts today announced that they've extended their exclusive agreement with the NFL and the Players Association for another three years, meaning the publisher has the only agreement in place with the league for creating licensed football games through the 2012/2013 season.
"We've just completed a period of renegotiations with the NFL for a three year extension of our current deal," Peter Moore said in an interview with Kotaku. He added that Electronic Arts plans to expand that license to include games beyond Madden, including, potentially, a fantasy football title.
Moore said had they not locked down the NFL license soon the publisher would have had to start making decisions about "redeploying" the team who would have been starting work on Madden 2010 in eight months or so.
Moore declined to comment directly on rumors that Electronic Arts has been in talks with the NBA to land a similar exclusive deal, but he did say it wasn't the way EA operates.

EA Makes Offer to Buy Take 2

Electronic Arts just called me to let me know that they are making a bid to acquire Take-Two Interactive in an all-cash merger of about $2 billion.
The offer set Take-Two's stock at $26 per a share, about 64 percent over the company's closing stock price prior to the company's Feb. 15 offer.
Take-Two's board rejected the offer, leading Electronic Arts to make their offer public to the company's shareholders.
In the letter, attached in the jump, EA CEO John Riccitiello tells Take-Two's Stauss Zelnick that the buy-out would help both the company and its stock holders:
Our all-cash proposal is a unique opportunity for Take-Two shareholders to realize immediate value at a substantial premium, while creating long-term value for EA shareholders. Take-Two's game designers would also benefit from EA's financial resources, stable, game-focused management team, and strong global publishing capabilities. ... There can be no certainty that in the future EA or any other buyer would pay the same high premium we are offering today.

I just got off the phone with Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello who called to talk about the back-and-forth going on right now between Take-Two and EA over Riccitiello's multi-billion dollar offer for the company.
I also, coincidentally, received Take-Two's comments on the whole, now-public, affair while on the phone with Riccitello. While the two seem to match up on the basic facts, their final analysis don't.

We've written quite a bit in the past day about Electronic Arts offer to buy out Take-Two, so some of you might be getting sick of the churn, but I think it's worth pointing out that EA did a call early this morning to reiterate their position on this whole thing.
While most of the call repeated what John Riccitiello told us in an interview on Sunday, they also had Warren Jenson, EA's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, on the line to talk about the potential impact the purchase might have on both companies. It's quite interesting, delving into the possible future of Take-Two's IPs and such.

Sony Allowing Competition For PS3 In-Game Ads

Sony has announced that managing the PlayStation 3's dynamic in-game ads will be a farmed out proposition. Instead of controlling the ads/market by forcing publishers to buy through them (as Microsoft does with the 360 through their company Massive), Sony will be opening their platform to all three big competitors in the market: Fusion, IGA and AdScape. While this news won't matter much for us as gamers, it's great news for publishers who can only benefit from advertisers fighting over a piece of their pie in the $400 million in-game advertising market.

Take-Two: Just Say No (To EA)

Oh it's such a soap opera. Early this morning Electronic Arts decided to bypass Take-Two and go straight to shareholders, offering to buy up stock from them directly at $26 a pop.
Now Take-Two is "recommending" that stockholders give the offer a pass.
The Board of Directors of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today recommended that Take-Two stockholders take no action at this time in response to the announcement by Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) that it has made an unsolicited conditional tender offer to acquire all of Take-Two's outstanding shares of common stock for $26 per share in cash.
Consistent with its fiduciary duties, and in consultation with its independent financial and legal advisors, Take-Two's Board will review and consider EA's offer, and within 10 business days, will advise Take-Two's stockholders of the Board's position regarding the offer as well as its reasons for that position.
This coming from the board that just voted itself big fat raises? Big fat chance Take-Two.
